Lyme disease is a devastating illness which has ruined thousands of lives across the country. In many cases it lays waste to once healthy and happy people. Symptoms often go unrecognised, meaning there are likely to be tens of thousands unknowingly walking round, bearing its burden.
For decades now, successive governments have woefully and negligently under-resourced research, leaving victims out in the cold. That is why I have announced a pledge to offer funding for a comprehensive and desperately needed, government-backed programme of Lyme disease research.
I want my offer to act as a catalyst for action, but ultimately it is down to the Government to take the lead and provide the resources and leadership required. The Department of Health has no more excuses for delay.
